Molly Sims Talks Mother's Day & Gluten-Free Treats

The celeb mom on whipping up a healthy breakfast for the whole family

There are some moms that make it all look not only easy, but even glamorous. Actress, model, blogger and TV hostess, Molly Sims is one of those moms. Sims hustles after her toddler, Brooks, in between jobs all while focusing on feeding her family the healthiest options possible. As a spokesperson for Udi’s Gluten-Free products, Sims uses the gluten-free goods to create healthy recipes for the whole family. Luckily she’s sharing some with the rest of us who have to eat gluten-free (like me!) just in time for Mother’s Day brunch.

I caught up with Sims when she was on a whirlwind press tour and getting ready for a weekend with her boys for Mother’s Day. As a busy wife and mother I wanted to know how she does it.

You have to tell me how you balance it all: Work, home, relationships.

You know what? I always feel guilty. But I play hard and I work hard. So when I’m with Brooks, I’m really with him. And when I’m not, I’m locked in my office focusing on work.

You’ve got a toddler; you’ve got to be exhausted.

I’m a little tired, I’m not going to lie. We get up very early. He’s talking, he’s walking, and his little personality is starting to come out! He’s 22 months and he just got into tantrums. But I got some great advice: Remember you’re the captain of the ship even if the ship is going down. Remain calm and steady.

Is Brooks more like you, or your husband (producer, Scott Stuber)?

He’s kind of a mix of both. My husband is very involved, and he’s such a good father. A lot of people complain about the lack of dad involvement, but my husband is so hands on. I’m lucky.

So I’m guessing he’s got big Mother’s Day plans for you. What are you doing?

I think we might end up at LEGO Land or the Santa Barbara Zoo. I think he and Brooks both have something in mind.

How long have you been gluten-free?

I'm not completely gluten-free. I got into it four years ago since I’ve always had a sensitivity to wheat. As I get older it has gotten worse. It’s more about having healthy snacks whether it’s peppers and cucumbers, or celery or carrots. Also I found the Udi’s granola for my husband and he loves it. We also like having the fun stuff too—the muffins, the pizzas and the quesadillas.

For me, it’s all about healthy living. And I feel better! I try to make it as fun and as good as possible.

Is your whole family gluten-free?

I even have my husband on the Udi’s white sandwich bread or the whole grain. It’s fantastic. We have it with almond butter and eggs every morning. Now people are becoming more and more aware of living gluten-free. There are over 40 million people with gluten sensitivity, and over 3 million people diagnosed with celiac! My best friend has celiac and it was only in the past seven years that was she diagnosed. It saved her life.

So what is your favorite recipe using Udi’s products that we can do at home?

I make this strawberry sensation where you cut the double vanilla muffin in half, whip up some heavy whipping cream, add hulled and sliced strawberries with a little lemon juice and sugar all in the middle. It is absolutely delicious.

You can also make yogurt and granola cups (pictured above). It’s so easy—just add coconut oil or butter, egg, and light brown sugar to the Udi’s au natural granola. Mix it all together, and make a little cup out of the granola that fits in a muffin pan. Bake the granola for 10-15 minutes.

Just in time for Mother's Day, what's the best advice you've ever heard about being a mom?

The advice I heard so much that I never believed was, “It takes a village.” But it’s true. You have to ask for help. If you have a question, ask your mother, ask your sister, ask your friend, ask your niece, ask your neighbor. Surround yourself, because you can’t do it alone. It’s impossible. And if you don’t hear the answer you need, you’ll at least get more information than when you started.

Something else I always say to moms, is to spend more than five minutes on yourself. Get out of your yoga clothes in the morning, and take some time to look and feel good. It will make a difference in your state of mind.
