It's a constant fight at my house, but I was raised that you eat dinner together every night as a family... talk about your day, no TV, no answering phones, etc. But my husband is the eat in front of the TV type and doesn't see what the big deal is. What does your family do?

We try to eat together when we can but after school activities sometimes get in the way. I do like your idea, though.
