  • Do you lie to your husband about your purchases?Latest reply: July 19, 2012, 9:44 p.m. by

If you get a new purse or new sunglasses your hubby doesn't want you to buy, do you hide them? I have before and one of my friends acted like I was committing adultery. Isn't this normal? I mean, maybe it's not the most honest thing but it's also not the end of the world either, right?

Communication and honesty in any relationship are super important, even for potential "white lies" like this one. The bigger question I would want to know is: Why does your husband not want you to buy something? Is he simply doing it because he is controlling, or are your finances in trouble? If it's the latter, then going out and purchasing items that might effect your financial stability (big or small) is something you need to take seriously. If your husband simply doesn't like you shopping, then you should have a conversation about that, and you can express why it might be important to you and he can do the same.

I'm not always exactly forthright about everything I buy at Target but I'm not exactly hiding a big screen TV either. So I'd say it's probably not a huge deal if it's not a big purchase...?

I like where Lindsay is coming from on this one.

I think it makes a significant difference whether you feel the need to hide your purchases, big or small, from your partner because he has a different view on personal spending and you are experiencing financial hardship.

Target is a tough cookie though. It's impossible to go into that store and spend less than $50...it just is. :)

The one thing to remember is that there is no big lie or little lie, a lie is a lie. A lie has the potential to destroy even the strongest foundaion. A marriage is built on love trust and honesty and nothing should be allowed to break that. The next time you are tempted to lie when asked what you bought ask yourself is this pair of shoes or whatever worth what we have worked so hard to build.

Yes a lie is a lie is a lie. If you have trust & communication you should not have to Hide anything (maybe a surprise)

Yes, I did. He would eventually find out and then he stopped trusting me with money. We just recently separated and are getting a divorce. I would not recommend lying about anything.

If avoiding the question by diversion is lying then the answer is yes.

I still am not sure why it is necessary; my mom first told me this almost 30 years ago, and not to long ago while having lunch my sister mentioned that she did? Why would anyone ever have to lie about a pair of shoes or dishes that they bought? If a person works and brings in her own money are we not allowed to spend out money on things that we may want or need for ourselves?

No I don't lie about my purchases, but i don't show him everything sometimes, simply because "he don't care".
