In the 19th century, “Big Bertha, the Confidence Queen” was one of New York’s cleverest con artists. Even New York police detectives begrudgingly praised her intelligence. Heyman, a short, stout woman with noticeable moles on her cheek, swindled people for thrills and claimed to have given her ill-gotten gains to the poor afterward. Heyman’s hustles were so good that she managed to con victims out of hundreds of dollars while she was still in jail.
