Trash cans and bins are useful and necessary items, but the trash that they contain can make the whole house smell awful. Decomposing matter within trash can emit powerful, offensive odors. These odors can be amplified by humid or hot conditions. Luckily, you can get rid of trash odor fairly simply. You also can use inexpensive, common cleaning products to aid you in your quest for a more favorable smelling area.
Remove the trash as often as possible. If you allow trash to accumulate in your trash can, you are increasing the chance for odors to spread. Move the trash to an outside container until pickup time, or take it to a public dump.
Scrub out the trash can with warm water and soap. Use a scrub brush with nylon bristles to remove dirt and debris.
Rinse the trash container thoroughly.
Fill the trash can with a solution of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water. Let this mixture remain in the can for several hours. Empty the trash can and rinse it. Sprinkle some baking soda into the trash can once it is dry.
Place a fresh trash bag in the can and sprinkle some baking soda into the bag as well.
Place various types of air fresheners or scented candles around the area to help freshen the smell.
