Skunks are actually beneficial to your lawn and garden. They feed on cutworms, mice, rats, grubs, yellow jackets, roaches, beetles and many other pests. Skunks secrete a terrible odor when agitated or frightened, though. Getting rid of the intense odor is not impossible. You can use homemade recipes to rid your pet, person, house or lawn of the nasty scent.
Pets or People
Mix 1 quart 3-percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap in a plastic spray bottle. This amount is enough for a small dog; double or triple the batch for larger pets or a person.
Spray your pet or person thoroughly with the mixture.
Rub your pet or person with your gloved hands for five minutes to allow the spray to saturate.
Rinse your pet or person well. If the smell is not gone, repeat steps 1 through 3.
House and Other Objects
Mix 1 cup bleach and 1 quart water in a plastic spray bottle.
Apply the bleach solution to an inconspicuous area to test for colorfastness of house or object.
Spray the mixture on the house or other object, thoroughly saturating the area the skunk sprayed.
Wait for the area to dry. Repeat steps 1 and 3 if the smell is not gone.
