While the Erector Set may not be the "must-have" toy of today, it is still being produced 100 years after its initial introduction. Alfred Carlton Gilbert, a doctor and inventor, created the toy after being inspired by the girders and electric lines on a New York train. During WWI, Dr. Gilbert even went to Congress to try to convince them that even with the rationing of metal, his Erector Set was important, inspiring young minds, and should continue to be produced. They gave in and let him to continue to create the metal toys. While today's Erector Sets are now a distant cousin of what it once was, the spirit of creation and invention is still alive in this toy.
