Update: Just before 10.30 this morning the Palace announced the name of the new royal bundle...HRH Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge! Did your bet win?
After nine long months of royal bump watching (and one seriously long day of royal door watching) the royal baby is finally here ... and it's a boy! Next up on the agenda? Waiting for (and obsessing over) that royal baby name.
Rumor has it that the Palace will make the name official as soon as today, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to leave the hospital. After all, that's when Prince Harry's name was announced to the world. But the royal name wait has lasted longer in the past—Prince William's came several days after delivery and Prince Charles's name wasn't shared until nearly a month after his arrival!
In the meantime, guesses are flying and wages are being bet over just what the little prince will be called. Some things we do know: It will be long and traditional. (So don't expect any North Wests or Blue Ivys.) It will also have a pretty impressive title: His Royal Highness, Prince of Cambridge.
"I think because the child is going to be the third in line to the throne, they have to maintain all this tradition," said Pauline Maclaran, a professor at Royal Holloway and co-author of the book, Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture. As she told Newsday, "They'll go for three or four names and ... be able to make the right nod to the right people."
Some of the front-runners for the little prince's moniker include George, James, Philip and Francis.
While only time will tell, George does seem to be leading the pack so far in terms of best guesses. As Victoria Arbiter told E! Online, "I wouldn't be surprised if we saw George as a first name as a tribute to the queen's father."
