Sugar skulls, also known as calaveras, are a common decoration for Day of the Dead altars. They're decorated with colorful icing, foils and other adornments—often including indivuduals' names—and symbolize the departed souls. All you need to make your own sugar skulls is a plastic mold, sugar, meringue powder and water.
To make eight skulls, you'll need:
4 cups sugar (Zulka brand azúcar morena cane sugar is pictured but you can use any granulated sugar you like)
6 teaspoons meringue powder
6 teaspoons water
