Move over, Fido and Rex—there are new dog names taking the crown for most popular of 2015. And perhaps even more surprising is that the top dog names are basically people names. We really do treat our pets like children!
As reported in the Huffington Post, data from Rover.com shows that the latest trendy dog names are people names — 49 percent, in fact. That's up from about 20 percent in 2013. So which names take the crown?
For male dogs: Max, Charlie, Buddy, Cooper, Jack, Rocky, Toby, Duke, Bear, Tucker
What else does Rover.com have to say about this year in dog names? Popular culture is one trend that has led to some interesting monikers. For example, people named their pets after famous characters in "The Hunger Games," with Effie and Prim taking the top two spots, and Katniss and Cinna tying for third. "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars" names were also popular. Less popular this year were names from "Twilight," "Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones."
When it comes to naming our dogs after food and booze, the typical choices appear: Ginger, Pepper, Peanut, Oreo and Olive were favorites, as were Guinness, Brandy, Porter, Whiskey and Kahlua.
And of course there are differences in naming our canines when it comes to red and blue states. Rover.com found that the top red state dog names are Coco, Gracie, Toby, Oliver and Sophie. For blue states, Parker, Charlie, Diego, Monty and Porter were top picks.
