How to Do the Football Hold for Breastfeeding

If your newborn is struggling to find the right latch to your breast, it might be time to adjust the way you are holding her. To hold your baby in the football position, you must line her up under your arm on the side from which she is latching instead of placing her on your belly, says Dana Ehman, a West Chester, PA-based lactation consultant. Position her so that her nose is at your nipple, Ehman says, and support her neck and head by placing your hand behind and just above her neck — not at the top of her head.
