How Long Do I Produce Breast Milk After My Baby Quits Nursing?

A woman can produce breast milk for a year or more after she stops nursing, says Kathleen McCue, a Bethesda, MD-based nurse practitioner and lactation consultant. “Sometimes vigorous showering and vigorous foreplay prior to intercourse can stimulate the breasts, ultimately building up the milk supply,” says McCue. If a mother is no longer pumping or begins to wean the child from nursing, her milk supply will slowly begin to decrease, says McCue.
