How to Ease Engorged Breasts While Bottle Feeding

Engorgement of the breasts is the result of overproduction of milk or incomplete or infrequent emptying, says Kathleen McCue, a Bethesda, MD-based nurse practitioner and lactation consultant. Applying warm compresses and gently massaging the breasts before expressing or using a hospital-grade breast pump can help soften the areola to ensure a successful pumping session, McCue explains. Frequent pumping also can help prevent engorgement, she says.
