How Many Calories Are Burned While Breastfeeding?

On average, a nursing mom burns approximately 500 extra calories a day, says Leigh Anne O’Connor, a New York City-based certified lactation consultant. “In the end it depends on so many factors, such as the size of baby, the mom’s metabolism, the amount the mom is nursing and the age of the baby,” says O’Connor. A mother with healthy weight and a healthy-term baby should satisfy her hunger and avoid cutting calories, says O’Connor.
