Should a Sick Mom Stop Breastfeeding?

If you find yourself feeling achy and consumed with sniffles and sneezes, it is best for you to keep the germs away from your baby as much as possible. But, a breastfeeding mother who is sick should still continue to nurse her baby, says Jill Reiter, a Shelby Township, Michigan-based certified postpartum doula. “She will pass on valuable immunities to her baby that often prevent the baby from becoming ill,” says Reiter. If you have been prescribed medication for an illness, though, Reiter recommends consulting with your physician to ensure it is safe to continue breastfeeding.
