Many of the foods that baby first tries, such as apple sauce, bananas and rice cereal, can be constipating and cause a baby’s stools to be thicker, firmer and even hard, says Dr. Jennifer B. Trachtenberg, a New York City-based pediatrician. “It’s very important to make sure that baby is getting adequate fluids as well, and begin introducing your baby to water at six months,” she says.
