How to Get My 1-Year-Old Off of the Bottle

If your baby is clutching her bottle and refusing to let go, consider weaning her with a sippy cup with an attached wide straw that is similar to a bottle's nipple, suggests Tammy Gold, a New Jersey-based psychotherapist and certified parent coach. “The day she turns 1, get your child focused during a feeding by reading her a book and then simply switch the nipple of the bottle to the nipple of the sippy cup with the same drink,” she says. “Once the child starts taking the formula out of this sippy cup, just continue to use that instead of a bottle.” Don’t delay, though, warns Gold. “The longer you wait, the harder it is to transition.”
