How Soon Should I Set Up the Baby's Crib?

Parents should set up a crib before the baby returns home from the hospital, says pediatrician Charles Shubin of Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. Although you can use a bassinet or playpen during the first few weeks or months, it is perfectly fine to let your baby sleep in his crib right away.

“Distance is often an issue for parents putting a baby in a crib in his own room, but the baby needs to be separated from your bed,” Shubin says. To eliminate the risk of suffocation, Shubin also recommends removing all blankets, toys, stuffed animals and comforters from your child’s crib.
