Is it Safe to Give a Baby a Pacifier While Sleeping?

If your baby can't seem to fall asleep without a pacifier, don't worry: The practice is not only safe but also encouraged, says pediatrician Ashanti Woods of Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. "It is believed that babies who use a pacifier are in an aroused state of sleep, and therefore may be protected against sudden infant death syndrome," he explains, pointing to the fact that SIDS may result from babies being too comfortable while sleeping and "forgetting" to breathe. "With that said, if your baby is able to sleep without a pacifier, that's fine too," he adds.
