What I Love Most About My Postpartum Body

Photograph by Twenty20

Ahh, the postpartum body. I think it’s something that most moms can agree is a total love/hate relationship. The extra flab from months of growing a human being, the stretch marks, the scars, the wider hips and lopsided boobs—it’s all there, staring us in the mirror each morning.

Now, we can choose to pick apart each inch of this new body of ours, and tear ourselves down, or we can choose to not only accept it, but embrace it. Sure, it’s hard to do, but this body of ours, it housed a piece of our heart. It grew a human being! It has done so much for us, and the least we can do is show it respect and love and be kind to ourselves. It doesn’t make sense to do anything else. Today, we want to focus on doing just that—to uplift and encourage all of you moms out there who might be forgetting to give yourself the grace you so deserve.

This is for you. This is for your body. It’s the only one you’ve got, and it's a amazing one.

“For the first time in my life, I love my boobs! Not only because they actually fill out a bra (but that’s a perk!), but because they are the life source for my baby. Amazing!” – Katie H.

“I love my C-section scar. It’s a reminder of everything I went through to get my precious baby. I had to have an emergency C-section, which was definitely not in my birth plan, and it was scary and crazy and emotional, but now here we are with our little miracle baby and every time I see that scar I’m reminded of that. I used to be ashamed of it, but now I’m so very proud of that scar!” – Julie F.

“I have grown to love my stretch marks—I’m proud of each one and think of them as my tiger stripes! I earned those stripes!” – Danielle D.

“My body isn’t even close to perfect, but I love that I’m okay with that! It’s squishy, wrinkly, full of stretch marks and extra skin—all reminders of what I’ve been through. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it housed a perfect baby and my confidence and happiness shows in my face, so who cares what my body looks like!” – Bridget K.

“I love that my body is a reminder that I need to take care of myself! Since pregnancy, this has been blatantly clear to me. To take care of my baby, I must first take care of myself. My postpartum body is a daily reminder of this!” – Cindy W.
