When U.K.-based photographer Helen Carmina posted a picture of a post-C-section mom with a baby laying under her scar, she never expected the photo to go viral. But that's exactly what it did.
The gorgeous photograph caused on online flurry, with most viewers' comments being extremely positive. One such commenter writes, "BEAUTIFUL!!! People are so ashamed to have C-section, they get judged that they haven't given birth as intend[ed]!! So this shows no matter how it happens she had given a life!!!"
A supportive father and husband shares, "My wife had both our children via C-section. She tries to hide it and wishes it wasn't there because it's a scar, but every time I see it I think about how she's the best mom I could've wanted for my children. I don't see a scar—I see a love [that] doesn't stop. I see a mother who gives everything she has."
Yes, it's OK to tear up now—we know we did.
Carina wrote on her Facebook page, "I didn't expect this image to reach so far. ... I photographed this mama's pregnancy a while back and she was telling me how terrified she was of having a C-section. Well, last week she went into labor but had to have an emergency C-section after complications. She asked me to come over this morning and shoot this particular image as her worst nightmare proved to be what saved her and her child's lives."
Considering that almost a third of pregnant American women end up having a C-section, it's refreshing to see this particular birth experience treated as reverently as its vaginal birth counterpart. Because as all moms should know, all birth is a true labor of love—and that's all there is to it.
