Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins are almost here, but don't rush out to the store for newborn diapers and "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" onesies. What these seasoned parents—plus new parents Amal and George Clooney—need is some good, old-fashioned twins advice.
While having a baby is a big event, having two at a time is a mind-blowing, life changing, adventure that not even a previous child can prepare you for. Here are some tips that will help any new parents of multiples as they adjust to double the cuddles—and double the doody diapers.
1. Flip-Flops Only
Ladies, in your last weeks of pregnancy with the twins don’t even attempt to fit your feet into actual shoes. The swelling will be so bad that only a flip-flop will accommodate your enormous, swollen tootsies.
2. Get the Room Ready
Ok, so Amal and Bey, you probably have a team of personal shoppers and decorators, but it’s still worth mentioning that you need to make sure you have all the furniture, supplies and other stuff on hand before the big arrival. Your days of being able to mindlessly wander the aisles of Target (or high end baby boutiques) are quickly coming to an end.
3. Sleep Now—Or Forever Regret It
Okay, that’s a lie. With your belly this big, you won’t actually be sleeping. But you can enjoy the silence since in a few weeks, you’ll be alternating waking up with each child. Twins may do everything together but waking up for feedings is the exception.
3. Prepare the Assembly Line
Washcloths, diapers, bottles and everything else. You’ll need a quick and efficient system for getting shit done. With one baby, you can spend hours caressing its newborn skin and slowly spreading lotion across its adorable tummy. With two it’s “Next!”
4. Buy that Double Boppy
Of course you’ll invest in the finest double nursing pillow available to woman. Then you’ll try grasping each of your screaming, wriggling newborns in a “football hold,” one at each boob. Then laugh and tell Jay-Z to go fill some bottles.
5. Take Photos in Twin Outfits
Ladies, you can trump everyone with the cuteness factor offered by matching or coordinating twin baby outfits. From Thing One and Thing Two to spelling out words (like LO-VE!) and this adorable set, you’ll be blowing up Instagram.
6. Just Say No to the Double Ergo
You may be tempted to try out one of those twin carriers but don’t. You’ll just look like a crazy woman with a baby hanging off each side of your chest. You take one and give one to the hubs to wear. (You know George will look so handsome wearing his baby.)
8. Send the Nanny (or Tina Knowles) Home
Having twins is A LOT of work, which may lead you to think the more help the better. Of course you should accept help, but especially in the beginning you need to feel confident that you can do things and go places with two babies on your own. So take some time to figure out how you’re going to navigate the world with that much baby. Believe me, the first time you successful go to a supermarket (you guys do that, right?) you’ll feel like Wonder Woman.
9. Leave. The. House
I know, it may seem daunting to take your babies outside, because it’s not just one baby, suddenly you’ve got a baby crew. But taking those important first steps, even if it’s just for a stroll around the block, can mean the difference between thriving and becoming a wild-eyed shut-in.
10. Get Used to the Crying
The sound of one baby crying can be grating but two at a time? It’s almost comical. When you’re out and about with two screaming babies, necessity requires that you ignore the stares of onlookers. So what if they’re crying in stereo? They’re babies, that’s what they do.
11. Spend One-on-One Time with Each Baby
This will become more and more important as your babies turn into kids, but it pays to start giving them individual attention now. The one true drawback of having twins is that your attention is literally divided between two little people at all times. Taking the time for one-on-one will help you get to know each baby and take things at a slower pace. (And you’ll definitely be saying – wow, having one is SO EASY!)
12. Prepare for them to be Famous
If you girls think you’re already on the A-List, it’s nothing compared to the attention twins receive. Famous or not, all twin parents need to be prepared for the ooh’s and ah’s (and weird comments and questions) that the very presence of two babies will elicit.
13. Be In Awe of Their Twin Connection
Whether it’s lying with their legs crossed in the exact same way or laughing hysterically at a joke you’re not in on, twins really do have their own “secret language.” Marvel at the bond that your babies have and drink in all the details.
14. Sleep Train Them
As a twin parent, there’s no time to hem and haw about whether or not to let them cry it out. Getting the twins on the same sleep schedule will give you back your sanity. I repeat – twins sleep at the SAME TIME.
15. Schedule Date Night
All of a sudden your romantic relationship is no longer all about you. That’s right Amal, no more long, luxurious weekend on Lake Como. In fact, you and your man will soon feel more like partners on team – or contestants on a reality show – more than you’ll feel like passionate lovers. Taking the time to connect without the twins there will be essential if you hope to stay together!
16. Accept Help
Although it’s important that you feel confident taking care of your own babies, that’s not to say you should turn down help when it’s offered. Whether it’s a relative or friend offering to let you get away for a night, or a stranger holding open a door for your double-wide, the only appropriate response is “thank you.”
17. Join a Twin Moms Group
So maybe you won’t be hanging out at your local coffee shop but that means it’s even more important to connect with others who have “been there done that.” Parents who’ve been through the twin thing are members of a special club – take advantage of their wisdom!
18. Create Routines
This is the only way to harness the chaos that is having twins. Find a playground and teach your twins how to “stick together” so you can watch them both at the same time. Practice going to the same places together – it’s as much for them as it is for you.
19. Take Time for You
Sure this is important for all new moms, but for moms of multiples it’s especially important to step out of the baby zone from time to time and remember what makes you YOU apart from them. Whether it’s a spa day or time to work or be creative, don’t feel guilty for doing that thing you do.
20. Remember It Gets Easier
The first few months (OK, years) with two babies the same age can be challenging but it will also be the most awesome adventure of your life! As the twins get older they will become “built-in buddies” for each other. Which means you can sit back and breathe for a second and marvel at all the love you have—times two.
Beyoncé, Jay, Amal and George, and all parents of multiples, listen up: You got this.
