Haters Gonna Hate, Hate, Hate But Taylor Swift Is a Great Role Model

In case you hadn’t heard, Taylor Swift just released her latest album "1989" on Monday and it’s already climbed to the top of the charts. It’s getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, but T-Swift still has her haters — some take aim at her personal life, some question her artistry and some just don’t like her ‘do. “Taylor Swift's hair makes me nauseous,” wrote one non-fan on Twitter, who might have just had some bad nachos.

I have a confession to make: I’m a mom who likes Taylor Swift. Not only that, but I happen to think she has a lot of qualities that make her a great role model for teen girls. Go ahead and hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, but this is why I’m OK with my daughters being Swifties:

1. She’s a great business model

She started her career at 17 and through talent and business savvy has managed to become one of the biggest pop stars in history, not to mention a brand powerhouse who has teamed up with everyone from Keds to Target to Diet Coke. And unlike a lot of young artists today Taylor writes her own music and lyrics – you have to admit she crafts some damn catchy hooks. (Don’t tell me you didn’t sing along even once to "Shake It Off" when no one was looking.)

2. She loves her fans

Taylor is known to be kind to her fans, taking every opportunity to reach out and connect with them. For her "Shake It Off" video, she gave them the chance to be part of the experience; my daughter was one of the lucky ones who was chosen (that’s her toward the end, in the lavender skirt!) and she said Taylor couldn’t have been nicer and more humble, hanging out with the fans all day and taking the time to talk to each one individually. And remember when she surprised one loyal Swiftie at her bridal shower? Taylor has good manners too — she even remembered to bring a gift.

3. She has a kind and generous heart

Just go ahead and watch this video and try not to cry.

Or this one:

Or even the time she left an Instagram comment for a fan who was being bullied.

4. She keeps it classy

She’s managed to remain scandal free and take the high road. Even when Kanye crashed her acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs she kept her cool and didn’t attack him backstage with a microphone stand, which is what I would have done.

5. She’s been smart in love

Taylor has taken a ton of flack for dating around. But haven’t most young people? And what would the alternative be — to stay with someone if it isn’t working out? I would hope the same for my girls — that they would have the strength and smarts to move on from a relationship that was no longer healthy. Even if it were Harry Styles or Jake Gyllenhaal, with whom she is never, ever, ever getting back together.
