7 Things to Know About the Gloria Estefan Musical

Photograph by Getty Images

A bio-musical based on the lives of superstar couple Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan is set to hit Broadway this fall. Oh, I'm sure you know, but just in case you don't, Gloria Estefan is the "Queen of Latin Pop" and has seven Grammy Awards with more than 100 million albums sold worldwide. Her musician producer hubby, Emilio Estefan, has 19 Grammy Awards of his own.

You know what this means, right? It means that the rhythm is going to get Broadway (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself).

The musical based on this celebrity power couple's story is aptly called "On Your Feet!" because you know everyone who goes to see it is going to have a hard time keeping their pompis in their seats.

There are so many exciting details surrounding this production, but for now let's focus on seven things you need to know about "On Your Feet!"

1. What's it about?

The musical chronicles the couple's journey from Cuba to Miami to fame. There are ups, downs and inspiration galore because even at the top of their game, this couple has faced challenges that would crush many. Don't forget that in 1990, Gloria Estefan was in a serious accident that left her with a broken back and she was told she would never walk again.

2. Who are the leads?

Ana Villafañe will be playing Gloria Estefan. She's a Cuban-American singer, dancer and actress from Miami. You wanna know what's crazy? She even went to the same high school as Gloria Estefan, but obviously not at the same time.

Josh Segarra will be portraying Emilio Estefan. He's from Florida and of Puerto Rican descent. His acting credits include "Sirens," "Chicago PD" and "The Electric Company" (my kids and I have totally watched him on Electric Company) on television as well as "Dogfight" and "Lysistrata Jones" on stage in New York.

3. Who is working behind the scenes?

The show is directed by Jerry Mitchell ("Kinky Boots"), choreographed by Sergio Trujillo ("Jersey Boys") and with a book by Alexander Dinelaris ("Birdman").

4. What big hits will be featured?

Audiences can expect to hear favorites such as "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," "Conga," "Get on Your Feet," "Don't Want to Lose You," "1-2-3" and "Coming Out of the Dark." There will also be new music written just for the show.

5. When does it hit Broadway?

Before going to Broadway, the show will have its world premiere at Chicago's Oriental Theatre this summer. Previews on Broadway will begin October 5 with opening night scheduled for November 5 at New York City's Marquis Theatre.

6. When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets are already on sale online where you can check for pricing and availability. It looks like tickets for opening night are already gone. Boo!

7. What should you wear?

Your dancing shoes, of course!
