Road Rage Thank You Notes

My parents taught me the value of a good, handwritten thank you note early on.

"Thanking someone lets them know you appreciate them," my dad always said.

That is why I really feel moved to create thank you cards for the thousands of drivers on the road who challenge me to be alert, patient, forgiving and rational. Without them, I may just be a normal, even-keeled mom going about my day.

Below are just 10 notes of gratitude I would like to leave on many a driver's car. I'm sure the possible variations are endless.

Dear drivers of the road:

1. Thank you for parking in two spots instead of one!
I really like the way your tire is perpendicular to the actual parking line. Signed – the kid who learned about boundaries, sharing and being considerate all the way back in kindergarten.

2. Thank you for slowing down as you merged onto the freeway!
I like the thrill of possibly being sideswiped by a semi-truck because I'm going too slow and can't move faster because you're in front of me. Don't mind the 65 mile per hour speed limit sign – that's meant as a suggestion, not a rule.

3. Thank you for almost hitting me while you checked your cell phone!
It reminds me of playing bumper cars at the carnival; except this is real life and my children are in my car. I'm just glad we're all having fun on the road.

4. Thank you for refusing to let me get over into your lane!
I know it belongs to you. I should have come better prepared with an offering before I so rudely asked via blinker to invade your territory. No worries, I can miss my turn and drive an extra mile ahead to make a U-turn and then come back down this way without bothering you. Sorry for my imposition!

5. Thank you for slamming on your brakes as soon as you cut in front of me (without even using your turning signal)!
I can see you're an important person in a big hurry, and I'm glad the two inches you gained by nearly causing me to rear-end you will get you where you're going faster.

6. Thank you for honking at me the very second the stoplight turned green!
Your car horn truly added a little pep to my already in-motion acceleration. It's almost as if you're providing the soundtrack to my drive. How creative!

7. Thank you for stealing the parking spot I waited the last 10 minutes for!
It's exhilarating to see whether or not I'll actually get to park my vehicle and go into the store. I'm just glad you'll get to take care of your needs today.

8. Thank you for plowing through a lighted crosswalk with pedestrians on foot!
My son was once hit by someone who didn't yield to pedestrians crossing the road. He lived, and I'm sure those pedestrians will too! You make walking across the street exciting!

9. Thank you for stopping in the middle of the road to talk to someone when I'm clearly behind you, waiting to go!
My child, the one who just injured his back while jumping hurdles in track, is totally fine waiting so you can continue this conversation. His doctor may cancel our last-minute appointment for not showing up on time, but that is nothing compared to your need to see how your neighbor liked last night's episode of Game of Thrones. Please, carry on!

10. Thank you for driving well below the speed limit in the far left lane on the highway!
I know they call it "the fast lane" and that those silly traffic signs say "slower vehicles move to the right" but you and I both know driving on the highway is a personal experience, adjustable for each driver's comfort level.
