Day of the Dead Face Painting Tutorial For Boys

Photograph by Rachel Matos

Before creating my little sister's Day of the Dead face painting tutorial, we searched for inspiration. One thing I noticed was that there are tons of Catrinas to choose from when it came to reference. But what about the guys? The options for tutorials and inspiration photos for men and boys' makeup for Día de los Muertos were scarce.

If you're looking for a Day of the Dead makeup idea for your son (or a male of any age), here's a fun, simple idea for a sharp Day of the Dead look.

Step 1: Make sure your teen's face is exfoliated and moisturized. The white paint sticks to every little bump so you want to start fresh with a nice smooth canvas. I used Ben Nye Clown White Makeup and applied it with a sponge applicator. I cleaned up the edges with a flat edge brush.

Step 2: My son does not like the feeling of eyeliner or anything going near his eyes, so I carefully painted around the eyes with Kryolan professional face paint in black. I started with the outer ring and then painted inward as he became more comfortable with the makeup being applied near the eye.

Step 3: He chose purple for his petal colors so I used a combination of Ben Nye's Vivid Violet and subtly outlined the petals with Kryolan professional face paint in blue.

Step 4: I had a shimmer eye shadow lying around so I dabbed a little bit onto the petals for a touch of sparkle. I created the illusion of a cheekbone with Kryolan professional face paint in black, then smeared the edge of my line downward with a makeup applicator sponge. To create the mustache, I applied the Kryolan face paint with a very thin paintbrush.

Step 5: To complete the look, I went in and added color closer to the eye with a black eyeshadow. I also added half a spider web to the forehead since he's really not into the floral embellishments. Paint the lips with vertical lines to simulate teeth, and you're done!
