"Kubo and the Two Strings," which arrives in theaters August 19 from Focus Features and LAIKA animation studio, takes audiences to a fictional version of Japan, where a boy named Kubo accidentally summons a spirit from his past.
Forced to go on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (voiced by Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to save his family and solve the mystery surrounding his late samurai father.
In our exclusive clip, Monkey offers Kubo some sage advice:
"You're growing stronger. You might not want to look quite so pleased about that," she tells him. "We grow stronger, the world grows more dangerous. Life has a funny way of keeping things balanced."
"Monkey, do you ever say anything encouraging?" Kubo retorts.
"I encourage you not to die," Monkey says.
Sounds a lot like tough love. What parent can't relate?
The film also stars voice actors George Takei, Ralph Feinnes and Rooney Mara.
