Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are over.

After over two years of marriage and 12 years together, the superstar couple have called it quits.

"This decision was made for the health of the family," Angelina's attorney said on Tuesday. "She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time."

Angelina Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 19, citing irreconcilable differences, and it is believed that issues over parenting the children are to blame.

This afternoon Brad Pitt released a statement, telling People magazine, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Most outlets are reporting that the root of the split is child care related, since Angelina requested physical custody of all six children. It's notable that the actress is not requesting joint physical custody, as it appears she only wants Brad to have visitation. The two share children Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and 8-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

TMZ sources claim that this custody issue is resulting from the reason for their split -- that her decision to file for divorce stemmed from Brad's parenting style.

Their insiders initially claimed Angelina's decision had nothing to do with another party and that there was no cheating involved.

Page Six, however, reports Angelina hired an investigator who allegedly discovered evidence Brad had an affair with Marion Cotillard in London on the set of "Allied." According to the tab's source, that "was the final straw" for Angelina, who reportedly wanted to distance herself from Hollywood anyway and start focusing more on her global humanitarian work.

TMZ also indicated Brad's alleged use of substances including marijuana and possibly alcohol left Angelina concerned for their children's safety.

"The older she gets, the more serious she becomes, and she is sick of the Hollywood thing," an insider told Page Six. "[Brad] wants to make movies. She doesn't. It's a fundamental difference. It's how you live your life."

US Weekly reports that Angelina "feels like a weight has been lifted." Their sources explain that the split "has been coming for some time."

The outlet's insiders verify that though she's relieved, it was a hard call to make. "This is a very difficult period for the family. It was such a difficult decision and it was so hard for her to make. Now that she has made it she knows it was the right thing," their source shared.

Court documents show that Angelina will not be asking Brad for spousal support, and that the star lists the legal date of separation as Sept. 15, 2016.

Angelina has attorney to the stars Laura Wasser representing her in the divorce.
