In 1997, 11-year-old Richie Stachowski created an underwater walkie-talkie prototype using just $267 of his own money. He pitched his idea to Toys “R” Us, which signed on for 50,000 units. Several other large retailers, including Kmart and Walmart, followed suit. Shortly thereafter the clever preteen invented three other water toys: a pool pogo stick, underwater binoculars and character-themed swim masks.
