Although he suffered from a rare form of muscular dystrophy, Mattie Stepanek never let the condition stop him from spreading his message or slow down his writing. In addition to becoming a New York Times bestselling author of five poetry books during his life, Mattie was also a peace advocate and lobbyist for disabilities. Oprah Winfrey called him one of her most memorable guests ever, and credits his advice for prolonging the Oprah Winfrey Show to the 25-year mark. Mattie passed away just before his 14th birthday in 2004. Former President Jimmy Carter gave his eulogy.
