David Beckham, arguably the most famous soccer star in the world, has decided to retire from the sport at the end of this season.
The English footballer, who inspired the ubiquitous phrase "Bend it like Beckham," will end his career as a member of the Paris Saint-Germain league, after playing for such teams as the Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester United.
While he thanked Paris Saint-Germain for the opportunity to keep playing, Beckham said, "I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," according to CNN.
But it was his family he praised when it came to his rise to the top.
In addition to his parents, whose sacrifice he said helped him to realize his dreams, he also gave a shout-out to his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and their four kids.
"I owe everything to Victoria and the kids, who have given me the inspiration and support to play at the highest level for such a long period," he said in a statement.
And while Papa Beckham might be hanging up his cleets, don't count out his boys (or girl!) as the next soccer champ—after all, eldest son Brooklyn has been known to bend it a bit himself.
