In our family, each vacation has two stories.
There’s the story of the vacation, itself (the time we went skiing and nearly lost a kid getting on the lifts). Then there’s the second story (how Harry saved Hogwarts from disaster, once again). These second stories, though, aren’t exactly ours; they’re the ones we listened to as we drove from one destination to another.
The audiobooks started because I refused to allow a DVD player in our minivan. I thought we’d replace the TV shows with music, conversation and, on long trips, sightseeing. What we got instead were fights and whining. In spades.
Five years ago, in a last ditch effort to avoid yet another screen, I went to the library and checked out an audiobook. Guess what? Quiet in the minivan.
