There’s no diminishing the importance of kindergarten. After all, it’s where little kids learn to be respectful society members who are proficient in reading and building Legos. That’s why 5-year-old Alanah Poullard was fortunate that President Barack Obama was kind enough to write her an excuse note this past September when she missed school to meet him. She was at the White House to attend an event for wounded service members with her dad when she asked the commander-in-chief to help her out, lest she risk the ire of her teacher for her truancy. It was at least the third such note the president has written on behalf of a student missing school to meet him.
