25 Days of Cookies: Starry Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies cut into seasonal shapes seem to pop up every holiday season. This year, we made ours extra special with red sanding sugar that glitters in after-dinner candlelight. For a sweet after-dinner treat, we tied the cookies up with red and white baker's twine for our guests to take home.

RECIPE: Starry Sugar Cookies

Yields 2 dozen cookies


  • ¾ cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • White frosting
  • Red sanding sugar


  1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla.
  3. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until combined.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap, and chill for up to 24 hours.
  6. Roll out onto a floured surface ¼ inch thick.
  7. Cut into star shapes with a cookie cutter.
  8. Space them 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake 6 to 8 minutes, until lightly golden brown.
  10. Once cooled, spread a thin layer of white frosting on top of the cookie.
  11. Fill a shallow dish with red sanding sugar, and dip the frosted cookies in the red sugar until coated.
