Heart-Shaped Cubes (3 Ways) for a Happy Valentine's Day!

You don't have to wait until dessert to say "Happy Valentine's Day" to your loved ones.

These heart-shaped "cubes" will make for such a sweet surprise on Valentine's Day morning, and they couldn't be easier to make!

I'm sharing recipes for three variations—vanilla bean, malted and dark chocolate—but the sky's the limit!

Using flavored extracts and syrups, you can customize these to cater to your little (and big) ones' favorite flavors. You can even make them dairy-free—just substitute almond (or other non-dairy) milk in any of the recipes.

I found the heart-shaped molds at my local craft store, but these recipes will work with any ice cube mold or tray you have on hand!

  • pinch of kosher salt
  • ½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Place the chocolate chips in a bowl; set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, bring the milk, cocoa, sugar and salt to a boil. Immediately pour over the chocolate chips and let sit, undisturbed, for 10 minutes.
  3. Whisk the mixture till completely smooth; pour into molds and freeze till solid.

RECIPE: Malted Milk Ice Cubes

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons malted milk powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Place the chocolate chips in a bowl; set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, bring the milk, malted milk powder and sugar to a boil. Immediately pour over the chocolate chips and let sit, undisturbed, for 10 minutes.

RECIPE: Vanilla Bean Ice Cubes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)

Directions:

  1. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Scrape out the grains and place in a small saucepan along with the split bean, milk, sugar and vanilla bean paste. Bring to a boil.
  2. Immediately remove from heat and pour through a strainer. Pour strained mixture into molds and freeze till solid.
