The numbers alone are staggering.
First, the big one: According to the U.S Census Bureau, there are 21.8 million veterans living in the United States today. But of those 21.8 million, some 1.3 million live uninsured, and another 60,000 are currently homeless. In fact, a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless cites that many of those homeless veterans—the same ones who once served our country proudly overseas or right here at home—now sleep on our streets every night.
To bring to light to these unsettling stats, and to put real faces on the people behind the uniforms, photographer Devin Mitchell created a photo series titled simply "The Soldier Art Project."
