Four-Year-Old Designs for J.Crew (Yes, Really)

J.Crew had already won me over with the cute, classic and stylish gear for girls. But then they had to go and up the fashion ante. They enlisted the help of a 4-year-old to create a very special capsule collection. This isn’t just any 4-year-old, but the one and only style sensation Mayhem.

Who is this Mayhem I speak of? Let me tell you.

Mayhem and her photographer mom, Angie, cobble together simple yet totally unique dresses out of paper, tissue and tape. Angie began to post their creations on her Instagram account, which attracted a ton of followers and saw a viral spike after the duo did a “collection” inspired by dresses worn at the Golden Globes.

As it turns out, this isn’t just a fun craft and/or bonding experience. It has become big business. Mayhem is launching her very own collection for J.Crew. I mentioned Mayhem is 4, right?

Angie posted about the surreal experience of receiving an email from Jenna Lyons, president and executive creative director of J.Crew, expressing the company's interest in signing on the preschooler to design for them. (People, she's 4!)

The answer was, uh, yes? The family went to New York City to get to work.

Angie writes on her blog:

“Mayhem and her new crew all sat down on the floor and played. And made stuff. Out of paper and tape and beads and glue and crayons. And they laughed and hugged and had more fun than I would have imagined. And then they sprinkled their magic J.Crew fairydust on it and turned paper into fabric.”

And the results? They’re pretty darn adorable. J.Crew gave a sneak peek of Mayhem’s designs on their blog here. The line will be available in Summer 2015, when Mayhem is the ripe old age of 5. From Instagram, to insta-fame, to a clothing line. Not even half a decade old.

You've gotta love the internet.
