6 Parenting Mysteries That Will Never Be Solved

Kids are mysterious. When they're little there's so much about them we can't figure out, so we look forward to the day when they grow up and all of the secrets will be revealed.

Then again, that day may never come.

Here are a few things about our kids that will continue to perplex us no matter their age, and the best we can do is react accordingly—and by that I mean let our imaginations run wild and think the worst.

1. Why are they mad?

You think trying to guess why your toddler is having a tantrum in the cereal aisle of the supermarket is hard? Try having to figure out why your teen isn't speaking to you. Did you fold their leggings wrong? Did you comment on their Instagram? Did they find your honeymoon Polaroids?

2. What's that smell in their room?

Is there a dirty diaper in the corner? Wet sneakers in the closet? A body under the bed? The odors change over time but they never, ever completely go away.

3. Why is everyone else's house more fun than yours?

For some reason your kids wanted to spend all their time at Jimmy's house, and you suspected it was because they were allowed to eat Hot Cheetos and drink undiluted juice. Now when your kids spend a lot of time at a friend's house you can't help but think it's because the parents have moved out and there's a keg in every room. (It's probably still the Hot Cheetos.)

4. Why are they friends with that person?

You could never understand the attraction between your kid and that wild, foul-mouthed troublemaker in second grade. Now your kid's grown and some of their friends are equally shady and you're finding yourself saying things like, "Just released? From where?" and "Selling purses from the back of the car is not something to aspire to."

5. Why are they eating that?

If you thought all those years of trying to guess why your toddler insisted on eating only pale food or dog kibble were over, think again. True, as they get older their eating habits aren't as baffling anymore, but you'll see what I mean when your teen forgoes your home-cooked lasagna in favor of a Doritos Locos taco.

6. How can they be bored?

It used to be that all the Legos, Polly Pockets and hideous videos of "Teletubbies" in the world couldn't keep them happy for longer than five minutes. Now boredom inexplicably sets in even in a house full of electronics while they're simultaneously updating their status on Facebook, Snapchatting and posting to Instagram.
