Be sensitive to your tween’s cues, says Fran Walfish, child and family psychotherapist and author of The Self-Aware Parent. If, for example, you put your arm around your tween at the market and he shrugs off your arm, give him the space he needs. Don’t make a big deal out of it or say how hurt you are; just let it be.
