When blogger Becca Beushausen began posting about her pregnancy in 2008 under the name “April’s Mom,” things seemed pretty normal. Then, her baby was diagnosed with trisomy 13 and HPE, both of which are fatal, and she invoked her Christian faith, writing about refusing an abortion. This won plaudits from commenters and many gifts from supporters. In June of 2009, April was born at home but tragically died soon after. The blogger posted a photo, but it wasn’t a baby—it was a lifelike doll. The whole pregnancy had been a hoax. Readers were outraged, and Beushausen had to make a public apology.
