In early 2011 Domaine Javier was accepted to California Baptist University’s nursing program on two scholarships. That spring, she appeared on MTV’s True Life, where she revealed that she was transgender. Shortly thereafter she received a letter from Cal Baptist accusing her of fraud because she had checked “female” on her application. A few months later, she was expelled. Javier, who recently filed a lawsuit, estimates that the school’s decision has cost her half a million dollars in scholarship money and future wages.
While Domaine was born a male, she has always identified as female and has presented as a girl since age 13. Had she checked “male” and shown up to orientation looking like a female, Domaine’s lawyer believes the school would have also accused her of fraud. Given this lose-lose situation, and because it’s clear that she never intended to misrepresent herself, various legal experts believe Domaine will win her case.
