One of the most astonishing stories of survival in recent history is the tale of Rita Chretien, who went sightseeing with her husband Albert one day in 2011 and wasn’t seen again for 49 days. According to TheStar.com, the couple were driving to Las Vegas when they decided to take an unplanned sightseeing detour in northern Nevada. When their van got stuck and they had no cell phone service, Albert set out on foot with a GPS device to find assistance. Alone, Rita rationed her food (a combination of hard candy and beef jerky) carefully and drank melted snow to stay hydrated. A pair of hunters found the mud-stuck van in Humboldt National Forest, and doctors say the severely malnourished Rita was days away from death . Albert’s body wasn’t found until 18 months later.
