While you probably already know that exfoliating before self-tanning will remove dead skin cells and give you a smoother tan, it’s easy to overdo it. New York facial plastic surgeon and skin-care expert Dr. Michelle Yagoda says, "Don’t over-exfoliate with a combination of retinols, microdermabrasion, peels or laser resurfacing. One method may be good, but beware of the slippery slope. More is not necessarily better and may even be harmful! Mature skin needs hydration and facial massage to increase blood flow to the skin and facial muscles—even more than exfoliation." So go easy on those scrubs!
