"If you haven't used it in a year," begins New York-based makeup artist Carmindy in her book "Positively Beautiful," "throw it out." And, while that's a good rule of thumb for every item in your medicine chest, makeup bag or bathroom drawer, it's especially true for your eye makeup.
Generally, you want to toss mascara after three months of regular use. Powdered shadows can last up to two years, liquid or gel shadows six months, and eyeliners should hit the basket after a year. So, root through your beauty booty and get rid of whatever lurks.
Left with nothing? That's OK! As Boston-based makeup artist Liz Fuller says, "Summer isn't a time for heavy eye makeup or harsh lines." All you need now is a simple, creamy, blend-able liner.
