What Material Do Babies Prefer to Chew on While Teething?

When a baby’s first teeth are pushing through, a cold, textured teether can help soothe the gum pain. According to Leigh Anne O’Connor, New York-based certified lactation consultant, some babies like hard objects, such as a frozen wash cloth, on which to chew. Others may prefer softer items such as a squishy, cold, store-bought teether. Putting fruit, such as a peeled, cold apple or chunks of frozen melon in a baby mesh container can be helpful. “Firm fruit in a mesh bag is a great choice and teething necklaces are also helpful to numb the pain,” she says. Make sure to choose only teethers and mesh bags that are labeled baby-safe.
