How to Clean Cast-Iron Utensils

Step 1

Use hot water and a sponge to scrub the interior of the pan. Pour out the water.

Step 2

Mix a paste of kosher salt and water if there is any food residue in the pan. Scrub the paste on the interior with a sponge until debris breaks loose from the surface.

Step 3

Rinse the cast iron pan one more time in running hot water. Continue to scrub until the surface of the cast iron is smooth and free of any food residue.

Step 4

Dry the cast-iron utensil thoroughly with a towel.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to a paper towel. Rub the towel around the interior of the pan. Using a clean paper towel, blot the surface until it is dry.

Store the cast iron pan in a dry area.
