Empty all the trash out of your waste container and bring the container outdoors. Washing your waste container outdoors, when possible, reduces mess inside.
Fill your waste container with warm water and add 1 cup baking soda. Wear rubber gloves, if you prefer. Stir the baking soda into the water with your hands until it's dissolved, then allow the baking soda solution to sit in your waste container for one hour.
Scrub the interior of your waste container with a plastic mesh scrubber. Stains should come off easily after soaking in the baking soda solution. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and mild abrasive.
Rinse out your waste container with plain water. Towel dry the inside to remove as much moisture as possible. Let your waste container finish drying in the sunlight to kill any traces of mold or mildew and continue to deodorize the surface.
Spray the inside of your waste container with undiluted white vinegar. Let the vinegar dry on the surface of your waste container to prevent the return of mold and mildew and keep your waste container smelling fresh.
