How to Clean Heavy Antique Fabric

Step 1

Lay out the fabric and stretch it flat if possible. Vacuum any dust or dirt from the surface using a soft brush attachment.

Step 2

Fill a tub with cool or warm water if the fabric is still dirty. Wash bright or dark colors in cool water. Add a small amount of mild detergent made for delicates.

Step 3

Submerge the antique fabric and gently swish it around in the water. Allow it to soak for five to 10 minutes, swish it again and drain the dirty water.

Step 4

Rinse the fabric thoroughly in cool water. Press it against the sides of the tub to get rid of any excess water.

Step 5

Place the fabric on top of a dry towel. Roll it up gently to absorb any water. Hang up the fabric or lay it out flat to air-dry.
