While most of us have fond childhood memories of a certain red-haired mermaid and her catchy songs, the real little mermaid as envisioned by Hans Christian Andersen did not live so happily ever after. First, she has her tongue cut out to be with the human love of her life, and while she desperately wishes for legs in both the Disney and Andersen versions, in the original she feels as if she's walking on knives the entire time she's a biped. And to add insult to injury, her prince ends up marrying another woman!
Heartbroken and lonely, the mermaid learns that the only way to return home to the sea is to kill the prince, but finds she can't bring herself to do it and kills herself instead. Super kid-friendly, right?
