Happy Hour: The Smoky Bee

This week's happy hour drink uses mezcal, a liquor distilled from the maguey plant and a cousin of tequila. The word mezcal comes from Náhuatl words that mean "cooked maguey," which results in the signature smoky flavor of the spirit. One of our favorite elements of a great cocktail is when all the flavors are perfectly layered. This week's cocktail, The Smokey Bee, is just that. Smoky mezcal, bright citrus, and sweet honey all get shaken up and the result is satisfying, refreshing, and our new happy hour drink of choice.

RECIPE: The Smoky Bee

Yields 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce honey
  • 1/2 ounce grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
  • 6 Maraschino cherries
  • Crushed ice
  • Maraschino cherries (garnish)
  • 1 1/2 ounces mezcal

Directions

  1. Place the six cherries into a glass and muddle lightly with a muddler (or the handle of a sturdy wooden spoon).
  2. Add crushed ice onto muddled cherries.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, add the honey, mezcal, lemon juice, grapefruit juice and ice. Shake for eight seconds.
  4. Pour drink into the prepped glass and garnish with a cherry.
